During the summer of 2014, we were discussing the possibility of social design in the neighbourhood with the municipality of Eindhoven, social housing company Woonbedrijf and care organisation Vitalis Berckelhof. Encouraged by their interest we took the initiative and proposed an event in Doornakkers for Dutch Design Week 2014. Working closely with project manager Sylvia van Aggel of Vitalis Berckelhof we planned, prepared and raised funds for Social&: the first social design exhibition in Doornakkers.

A full nine-day event during DDW 2014, Social& took place in the communal space of Vitalis Berckelhof, a living and care institution for senior citizens in Doornakkers. It offered a variety of exhibitions, workshops and discussions by over twenty individual and group participants. Young and old shared knowledge and expertise and worked together on new ideas. By presenting both design projects and local creative projects side by side, Social& was a refreshing and timely event that emphasised the strength of citizen participation.

Under the themes of Social& Design and Social& Wellbeing, we showcased the reality and vision of social design in Eindhoven with Doornakkers as the stage and context of social innovation. Social& attracted nearly one thousand visitors to the neighbourhood during DDW 2014. Visit doornsocial.nl to get a detailed overview of what happened and who was involved.

Social& presented us with new opportunities as social designers dedicated to social projects in Eindhoven. We met many new people who were dedicated to social innovation in the city, many of whom became invaluable friends and partners. It helped us secure an assignment from the municipality in 2015, to continue social design in Doornakkers, and with this assignment we were able to focus on developing projects that came out of Social&, such as Uit de Buurtfabriek, NIEUW/OUD and Agents of Change.
